What to Expect in the Weekly Voice Classes
The
first class will begin with each singer singing a
song of his/her choice, for the class.
Jay
will then speak about and demonstrate:
1.
Your posture - your thoughts - and your
physical presence when performing;
2. How your body can help support your
sound and prolong your phrases;
3. the concept and demonstration
of “Speak Singing;”
4. How to get rid of Stage
Fright.
During
the time remaining of the first class, Jay will share
thoughts on your questions.
For example: Do I have potential for a career? What is my voice
type? What is my range?
Do I have potential for Musical Comedy, for Pop, for Opera?
Voice
classes 2 through 10 in the series will begin with 20
minutes of “Speak Singing:”:
We
will use word phrases on music pitches to
Increase the singer’s breath capacity;
Increase the duration of one’s breath
phrases while maintaining the same volume;
Learn how to use the "Sigh,” to
get rid of tongue and throat tension.;
The
remaining 2 hours will have each singer perform one of
his/her selected songs.
Jay
will offer suggestions to each singer to help improve the
singer’s delivery and interpretation
Comments
from Three Singers
Singer AR said:
"There's a lot of unlearning that needs to go on with me
before I can do it independently. But I do want to emphasize
that I see the need for teaching singing as a form of
modified speech. Because, truly, that's what it is."
Singer AM (a primary grade teacher) said:
"when helping kids ..... that singing can be a more natural
sound, and does not have to be a light airy whispery sound.
They do not speak like that, Why would they sing like that?"
Singer ID said:
"I have learned so much from the 10-week class that I will
use in my future. The breathing exercises very much helped
me the most. It helped me take better breath before I sung,
have a more powerful sound, and even helped me with my
posture." |
